What is the Bigger Boat Film Quiz?

The Bigger Boat Film Quiz is a pub quiz dedicated entirely to films.

How is it different to any other pub quiz?

Well, it's a quiz, in a pub, but there the similarities end. The Bigger Boat Film Quiz is a multimedia extravaganza, run off DVD and projected onto a big screen (the only way a quiz dedicated entirely to movies should be shown!). We don't just ask you questions about films, we show you.

What does it cost?

It costs £2 per person.

What time does it start?

The quiz starts at 8.30pm, but to get a seat, get your answer sheets, get a round in and be ready for our cool intro video, you should aim to be there by 8pm at the latest. Though as it tends to get very busy, we'd advise you to get there as early as possible to secure a good table.

How many people do I need for a team?

There are no restrictions on team size. You can have as many or as few people as you like.

What can I win?

Each month we give prizes for first, second and third place. We provide two film-related prizes/prize bundles and the venue donates a bottle of champagne. After reading out the scores we invite someone from the top three teams to come up and choose the prize they want, with the team scoring the most getting first choice.

 

We've also recently introduced some instant win questions, where the first person to guess the answer from a list of clues wins a spot prize, and a booby prize for last place.

Film-related prizes?

Past prizes have included an array of high-quality figures, the 'Scene It?' board game, Lord of the Rings Trivial Pursuit, Star Wars Monopoly, Batman Scalextric, a talking Gollum and a life-size 'facehugger' from Alien. That's what we mean by 'film-related' prizes.

What sorts of questions do you ask?

If your idea of a pub quiz is some old fella reading questions from a scrappy bit of paper, then think again.

 

Quiz Night starts with the Posters round. It's simple enough, you get a bunch of movie posters with the film titles erased. We want the name of the film. Have a go.

 

Each month, we choose one of our favourites actors/actresses and ask feature Guest Star questions on them. But as this is the Bigger Boat Film Quiz, we also create a video intro sequence featuring some of their most memorable moments to whet your appetite.

 

The Soundtracks round consists of a selection of ten soundclips from film scores or songs, we just want to know the film it's from. Usually we aim for 5 of each, scores and songs. It's great to watch the expressions on people's faces as they kick themselves when the answers are played! Try it out now.

 

While every question we ask involves some form of visual on the big screen, there's also a printed Picture round to keep people busy during the interval while we mark the first half answers. In the Trailers round, we take ten trailers from upcoming films, chop them up, and stitch together a Frankenstein's monster from the pieces. Or more accurately, we edit together visuals from nine of the trailers and over that we play the full audio track from the tenth. You need to unjumble it all and give us the ten films.
