What is You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat Quiz?

You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat is a pub quiz dedicated entirely to films.

How is it different to any other pub quiz?

Well, it's a quiz, in a pub, but there the similarities end. The Bigger Boat Film Quiz is a multimedia extravaganza, run off DVD and projected onto a big screen (the only way a quiz dedicated entirely to movies should be shown!). We don't just ask you questions about films, we show you.

What does it cost?

It costs £2.50 per person.

Where is the quiz held?

We run each month's quiz twice: once in North London, once in South London. Our quiz in Highgate is held at The Boogaloo, while our Brixton quiz is held at Upstairs at the Ritzy. Find out more here.

What time does it start?

The Highgate quiz starts at 8pm, and the Brixton quiz starts at 7.30pm. However, to ensure you get a seat, get a round in and be ready for our intro video, you should aim to be there as early as you can. Particularly in Highgate, it tends to get very busy.

How many people do I need for a team?

There are no restrictions on team size. You can have as many or as few people as you like.

Can I reserve a table?

All tables at both quiz nights are reserved for players in the quiz. Unfortunately we cannot take reservations for individual teams, so it's first come, first served.

How do I buy a ticket?

At both venue you can buy your entry ticket from the bar staff when you arrive.

What can I win?

Each month we give prizes for first, second and third place. After reading out the scores we invite someone from the top three teams to come up and choose the prize they want, with the team scoring the most getting first choice.

We also have two STOP! rounds, where the first person to guess the answer from a list of clues wins a spot prize.

Film-related prizes?

Past prizes have included an array of high-quality figures, the 'Scene It?' board game, Lord of the Rings Trivial Pursuit, Star Wars Monopoly, Batman Scalextric, a talking Gollum, a life-size 'facehugger' from Alien and bundles of DVDs. That's what we mean by 'film-related' prizes.

What sorts of questions do you ask?

If your idea of a pub quiz is some old fella reading questions from a scrappy bit of paper, then think again.

We have a number of specials that we run throughout the year (including Halloween Horror, Summer Blockbuster and '80s) but must of our quizzes follow the same format so you know what's coming. To get an idea of a typical quiz night, check out the Sample Quiz we have online.

While every question we ask involves some form of visual on the big screen, there's also a printed Picture round to keep people busy during the interval while we mark the first half answers. Each month we have a different theme - you can see some examples among the Excel quizzes available here and in the online poster rounds section.

Why do I recognise the name?

It's a very famous quote from a very famous film. And if you already know which one, you're in the top half of the scoreboard already!
