22nd December 2007 We've finished putting together the quiz for January and will send you a few clues a couple of days before if you sign up to our mailshots. But to keep you going until next year, we've also uploaded two more online picture rounds, including an expanded Christmas round. Merry Christmas one and all!
10th December 2007 And so another quiz year draws to a close. We hope you all enjoyed last Wednesday's quiz, which proved to be harder than most people thought! The results and winners' pictures can be found here.
We hope you all have a good break, and we'll see you all in the new year... with the first quiz a week later than usual to give us all a chance to recover from New Year's Eve.
See you on Wednesday 9th January.
6th November 2007 This year's Halloween horror quiz saw the winning team score the highest mark we've ever seen in the regular quiz - dropping just three-and-a-half marks. In addition, most teams managed to get at least half marks, so it can't have been too difficult. Results and winners' pictures can be found here.
The next quiz will be on Wednesday 5th December, out last quiz of 2007. It will feature a couple of Christmas-themed rounds, but will otherwise be a review of all the films that have been released since the end-of-2006 quiz...
8th October 2007 Last week's '80s special saw an amazing 30 teams fighting for glory. In the end, a crafty alliance between the Lord of the Chick Flicks girls and the boys of The Warriors saw them storm into first place. We were also surprised and delighted to see a new team, Kelly's Heroes come in a close second... hopefully they'll be back for more. Results and winners' pictures can be found here.
The next quiz will take place a week earlier than usual... as it's Halloween. We'll be following on from previous years with a Horror Special to mark the occassion. Along with the gore expect some scary thrillers and the odd well-it's-meant-to-be-scary film (Tremors anyone?).
29th September 2007 Next week's '80s-themed quiz is in the bag, so in the meantime we've given the website a bit of a tidy-up. we've reorganised our old quiz night results pages (archiving all the scoreboards and winners' photos) and updated our sample questions with poster, soundtrack and trailer rounds, as well as lots of trivia questions, from past quiz nights.
More importantly, we've added some new online picture quizzes for you to play, which are accessed through the menu bar on the left by choosing Play Online. Regular quiz-goers might recognise the titles of the first four (Aliens, Liberty, Monkeys and Robots) from past picture rounds but we've expanded these with lots more new pics. For example, our robots quiz now features over 50 cinematic cyborgs for you to identify. Perfect for those slow days at work!
We hope to try and add new online picture rounds at regular intervals so watch this space.
7th September 2007 Big thank you to everyone who joined us for last night's quiz - the results and pictures are here. The Instant Win questions we introduced at August's Blockbuster special seems to be working ok so hopefully we can add a couple of these to each quiz night.
The soundtrack round seemed to have a lot of you stumped. No excuses for not getting the song from Toy Story but we'll let you off Ennio Morricone's theme from Orca: Killer Whale!
As we mentioned, next month sees the return of the '80s movie special, so break out the eye-liner and spangly gloves, rev up the DeLorean and get yourselves down to The Boogaloo on October 3rd for a hefty dose of John Hughes, Chevy Chase, Arnie in his heyday, Brat Pack and Wang Chung.
3rd August 2007 We hope you all enjoyed the Summer Blockbuster Special on Wednesday. In spite of the glorious sunshine The Boogaloo was packed as usual... and every team managed to get at least half the answers right, so you all did very well indeed. The results and winners' pictures can be found here.
We'll be back in just over five weeks' time with the September quiz, which will take place a day later than planned on THURSDAY 6th September. For those of you on our mailing list, clues will arrive just before the quiz.
24th July 2007 We're getting very excited about next week's summer blockbuster-themed quiz. The questions are finished and we've got a bumper stack of prizes to give away, including a very cool Optimus Prime voice changer mask/helmet thingy from the new Transformers movie, an 18-inch talking Jack Sparrow figure, and some DVDs along with the usual bottle of champagne.
And as we mentioned in the last update, as well the prizes for the three top-scoring teams, we've got some other goodies to give away during our Instant Win questions. We read out a list of clues describing a film or an actor and if you think you know the answer you shout out "stop!". If you're right you win a prize, if you're wrong we continue the clues until someone does get it… the catch is, once you've had a go you can't answer again. We'll have to see whether this idea works in the pretty crowded Boogaloo but we're looking forward to trying it, and if it does work hopefully we can incorporate it into our regular quiz format.
Hope to see you on the 1st!
7th July 2007 Good to see the smoking ban didn't have any effect on turnout, with twenty-six teams battling it out at July's quiz. The results and winners can be found here.
For August's quiz, we're stepping away from the usual fare to bring you our Summer Blockbuster Special. No foreign language films, no black and white films, just pure unadulterated mainstream spectacle... plus a few chick flicks. Expect superheroes, disaster movies, sequels and, most importantly, lots of explosions.
And from August onwards we'll be introducing a number of changes. In addition to adding 50p to the entry fee, we're gonna try out some Instant Win questions (those of you who came to our charity quiz last year might remember the 'Stop!' questions) where you can win a prize on the spot. There will also be a booby prize for last place and something more substantial for second place.
Hopefully this will give teams that don't usually get in the top three a chance to go home with something... other than a hangover and bruises from kicking themselves during the answers to the music round!
13th June 2007 June's results and winners' pictures are now up.
11th June 2007 Last month's movie quiz - quite possibly our most difficult yet - saw another full house at the Boogaloo (scores and pics will be up shortly). Congratulations to those teams who knew that Queen Gedren was from Red Sonja (close but no cigar to the teams who put down Conan the Barbarian, Gedren was played by the lovely Sandahl Bergman who played Arnie's squeeze Valeria in Conan).
See you all on July 4th!
5th May 2007 Despite the glorious May evening, we had 27 teams packed into the Boogaloo for last night's quiz. We were so rushed off our feet we completely forgot to mention it was our 2nd Birthday quiz. So a big thanks to everyone who helped make last night a lot of fun, especially to our fantastic regulars. Speaking of which, the night saw another victory for The All-Day Breakfast Club, who seemed very happy to take home the Darth Vader voice changer helmet. Photos of the top three prize-winning teams and scores for all the teams can be found here.
Well done to the few teams who correctly identified the screenshot from Zombie Flesh Eaters in our Give Me Liberty picture round (shots from films featuring the Statue of Liberty), officially the hardest question in this month's quiz.
Writing is already underway on next month's quiz, which will take place on June 6th (D-Day, I believe), same place, same time. And to celebrate the coming summer, here's our Little Miss Sunshine-inspired poster...
6th April 2007 The results from Wednesday's quiz are now up. It's good to see another team in the top three!
The next quiz will be on Wednesday 2nd May and will see us enter our third year as hosts of You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat. If you're lucky, we might repeat last year's birthday quiz and bring cake...
12th March 2007 Last Wednesday's quiz saw The All-Day Breakfast Club... go for a record four first-place wins in a row, only to be pipped at the post by Metro(sexual)Dome, the only other team to equal their three consecutive wins.
Despite our promise to toughen things up, the Oscar theme sadly helped make this one of the easiest quizzes in Bigger Boat history, with the winners dropping a mere 3 marks overall. Never again!
8th February 2007 Well despite announcing early on it
was our easiest quiz so far, we were quickly proved wrong
by the fantastic Wednesday
night crowd (a record 31 teams!). The soundtrack round
in particular seemed to stump most of you (congratulations
to the one team that correctly identified the music from
cult '80s movie Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension!),
though I was disappointed that at least two teams scored
full marks on the Alien Nation picture round. The next
one will be tougher I promise...
The next film quiz is on Wednesday
7th March and it's an Oscar Special, to mark
the 79th Academy Awards happening later this month, so
get swotting up on your Oscar-winning movies.
14th January 2007 Happy New Year, Quizzers! The first quiz of the year was a great success (small marking error aside), with players coming from as far away as California to take part. The Last Mimzy in the trailer round seemed to stump everyone. But, surprisingly, many teams did very well on the To Play The King picture round, even though we thought it our hardest picture round yet.
The next quiz is on Wednesday 7th February. See you then!
8th December 2006 And so another quiz year draws to a close. The results for the Christmas Quiz are now up. The three top teams were all just half a point apart from each other - we've never had such a close run quiz! And the winners were a brand new team who stormed straight to the top in their first quiz.
We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Speaking of which, the January film quiz will be a week later than planned (to give people time to recover from New Year's Eve) on Wednesday 10th January. See you all then!
4th December 2006 The Bond quiz was a great success - we hope all those who came had a fantastic time. The results and winner pictures are now up and more pics will appear in the Gallery soon.
See you all this Wednesday for the Christmas quiz at the Boogaloo.
8th November 2006 All tickets to the Bond quiz have now been sold. For those who managed to get some, "See you on the 20th!"
...and we hope to see the rest of you at the next Boogaloo film quiz on Wednesday 6th December.
7th November 2006 Apologies for the delay - the results and pictures for the Halloween Horror Special are now online here.
We're down to a dozen unsold tickets for the Bond event, so if you want to take part, get in quick!
1st November 2006 We hope you all enjoyed the Halloween Horror Special last night. Results and winners pics will be a bit delayed, but will appear some time next week...
Tickets to the Leicester Square You're Gonna Need a Bigger BOND quiz on Monday 20th November are selling fast. To get your hands on tickets and to find out more select Bond Quiz from the menu on the left.
7th October 2006 The results and winners pictures from Wednesday's quiz are now up. The next quiz will be taking place a day earlier than normal as it's going to be an all-horror Halloween special... so we're holding it on Halloween!
1st October 2006 We hope you're looking forward to Wednesday's quiz. In the meantime, we'd like to announce a very special event to coincide with the release of the new Bond film - Casino Royale.
On Monday 20th November, we return to Leicester Square for You're Gonna Need a Bigger BOND. To find out more, select Bond Quiz from the menu on the left.
13th September 2006 The results from last Wednesday's quiz are now online. Thanks to Ti and Johnny for giving us a break. We hope you enjoyed their quiz as much as we did.
On to the next quiz, which will be held on Wednesday 4th October. Remember to sign up for the mail updates to receive a few clues on the next quiz!
5th September 2006 We've been enjoying our month off and we're looking forward to taking part in tomorrow's quiz.
11th August 2006 Due to work commitments, I'm afraid Simon and I are going to have to skip a month of quizzing. But fear not! September's quiz will be in the hands of two long-time regulars, Ti and Johnny.
While we won't be hosting this month, we will be there on the night to take part along with the rest of you. In the meantime, we hope to update some of our online content and add some more Excel quizzes for you to download and enjoy.
See you on September 6th!
4th August 2006 In a word: wow! Last Wednesday's Summer Blockbuster-themed quiz was an unprecented success. We still can't quite get over just how many people crammed into the Boogaloo to answer questions on such cinematic delights as Top Gun callsigns, superhero secret identities and "who is the tallest member of the Fellowship of the Ring?". There were so many people wanting to play, we had to run to the newsagents and photocopy more answer sheets!
28th July 2006 The writing of next Wednesday's blockbuster-themed quiz is well underway. In a change to the usual format, each round will cover a particular genre, from Historical Epics to SciFi & Fantasy, Action movies to Chick Flicks... definitely something for everyone.
In addition to the usual champagne, we've got blockbuster prizes including Lord of the Rings Trivial Pursuit DVD game, and from our good friends at www.6degreesfilm.com, a nice bundle of Superman goodies, including the DVD boxset of the original four movies, a T-shirt and the graphic novel adapt ion of the new movie, Superman Returns.
A reminder that the quiz now starts at 8.30pm, and that while all the tables in the pub will be reserved for quizzers, it's first come, first seated, so try and get there as early as possible to grab a good view.
See you on the 2nd!
30th June 2006 Well we like certainly like the new Boogaloo setup - especially the bright, crisp new projector! And with the new extra seats and general notices to keep out the riffraff, we were able to seat everyone comfortably - in spite of doing away with team table reservations. For us, no reservations and an earlier start time makes a world of difference, so we hope it works out well for you, too.
Results and winners pictures are in the usual place, and there are a couple of extra shots in the Gallery. So on to the next quiz...
As it'll be the height of summer, we're making the August You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat a Blockbuster Special. Each round will focus on a different genre (Action & Thriller, Sci-Fi & Fantasy, Comedy etc.) and all the questions will be on the biggest and best films in each category.
Put it in your diaries now!
26th June 2006 Hope you're looking forward to this Wednesday's quiz - I know we are. For the quiz, you might want to brush up your movie prisons, your X-men and superheros in general.
A little reminder that from now on the quiz will start at the slightly earlier time of 8.30pm. Hopefully this will mean all you quizzers with a long journey home won't have to rush to get last trains.
See you Wednesday!
14th June 2006 Results and pics of the June quiz winners have been added. Select the page from the 2006 QUIZZES tab on the left or click here. We also took some extra pictures of the night, which can be found in the gallery section.
10th June 2006 PROJECTOR UPDATE: the fear of fifty IN-GURR-LAND fans starting a riot has forced the landlord of the Boogaloo to splash out on a brand-new, top-of-the-range projector. So we can assure you that we will be back with all quiz guns blazing on June 28th.
See you then!
9th June 2006 Thanks to everyone who joined us on Wednesday. Everyone was fantastically patient while we tried to fix the projector at half time, but it was beyond repair, forcing us to drop two entirely visual-based rounds from the second half.
26th May 2006 The You're Gonna Need a Bigger Boat Film Quiz is London's best kept secret no longer! Offering a much-needed respite from the usual tales of knife murders, terrorist plots and Tube strikes, last Wednesday's edition of the capital's favourite muck-racking scaremongering rag, the Evening Standard, carried a great double-page spread on London's best pub quizzes and wouldn't you know it, featured a nice review of yours truly, even mentioning a couple of our regular teams, Crouch End Tiger and You've Got Mail (Genitalia). The full article is available via the Standard's online edition and we hope to have a scan of the paper up soon.
16th May 2006 We're pleased to announce that last night's Leicester Square special was a resounding success. Everything ran smoothly and we managed to raise just over £400 for Breakthrough.
In addition to a huge stack of goodies for the three top-scoring teams, including exclusive tickets to a preview of Poseidon at the IMAX, our new instant-win "Stop!" questions and three raffles meant there were plenty of prizes to go round - all thanks to our friends at www.6degreesfilm.com
Results and winners pictures are in the 2006 Quizzes section and there are some pics from the night in the Gallery section.
See you on the 7th of June for a regular Boogaloo quiz!
28th April 2006 Wow! Thanks to all those who have signed up for the Breakthrough Breast Cancer quiz. We have now allocated every ticket available. We're sorry that we couldn't fit any more in, but they wouldn't let us have the Millennium Dome!
27th April 2006 Thanks to all those who made it to our birthday quiz last night. We hope you all enjoyed the cake. Oh, and the quiz. The results and winners pictures are in the usual place.
The next Boogaloo Quiz will be on the 7th of June, but before then, together with our friends at 6degreesfilm , we are holding a special film quiz in Leicester Square to raise money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.
You can find out more here: Charity Special
22nd April 2006 Next week's quiz is ready to go. A
couple of hints: maybe swot up on your movie robots...
and Sean Connery.
6th April 2006 Many thanks to the Steven Seagal team for putting on yet another thoroughly entertaining quiz. The final scores and winners photos will appear in the Past Quiz Nights section in due course.
And on to the next quiz, which will be held a week earlier than normal on Wednesday 26th April. Reservations will open shortly...
4th March 2006 We hope you enjoyed Wednesday's quiz. Congratulations to two of our newer teams The 186ers and Captain Correli's Mangled Limb on their first ever wins. The final scores from the night and pictures of the winning teams can be found here.
The Steven Seagal team returns to the helm for the April quiz, which will be held on Wednesday 5th. And for this quiz, the good folks at 6degrees film will be donating an extra-special first prize in exchange for a few shameless plugs like this one.
2nd February 2006 Welcome to the new website! We're finally up and running and we hope you'll take time to familiarise yourself with the layout. As well as news on upcoming quizzes and pictures and results from quizzes past, you'll find a selection of questions on the site. We'll be adding to these as time goes by, both with questions from Quiz Night and questions written just for the web. Also make sure you check out the interactive Excel quizzes.
Many thanks to the Alan Smithee team for giving us last night's quiz. Once again it was great fun, and we're sad to say that there will be no more Alan Smithee quizzes. But we hope we'll still see them on Quiz Nights. Pictures of the winners can be found in the Past Quiz Nights section.
The March quiz is on St David's day, and so we're planning a Tom Jones special. Only kidding! Visit the forum to reserve your table.
12th January 2006 Happy New Year, everybody!
Thanks to all those who came to last night's quiz. One thing we've noticed is that the top scores are really starting to close up now - which means those top three places could all depend on just a couple of answers for you top-scoring teams... could make things interesting for the future!
And straight on to next month's quiz, when we are handing over the quiz reins once again to the Alan Smithee team who have promised us an anti-Valentine's Day special... 9th December 2005 Thanks a lot to the Steven Seagal team for giving us another splendid quiz this month. I hope you all enjoyed yourselves, I know we did!
We have decided to abandon trying to get the old forum back and have therefore started up a new one. We're afraid that you'll have to reregister to use it, but we thought that was better than being without a forum for any longer.
The January quiz will be on Wednesday 11th and reservations are now open (visit the new forum to grab yourself a table).
29th November 2005 We are currently having a problem with the forum. The current hosting company have shut it down! We are in the process of trying to move the old forum (hopefully intact) to a new host and it should be back up soon.
As part of the move, the address for the forum (along with the main site) will change, as we are now located at: Rest assured, the December quiz is still happening!
27th October 2005 A big thank you to all those who came to last night's quiz. An all-horror Halloween special certainly jumbled up the final rankings. Check out the Past Quiz Nights section for pics of the top three teams.
The next quiz will be held on December 7th and will be brought to you by the Steven Seagal is Fat and Always Late... Fact! team. If you were at their previous quiz in July you might remember the fine collection of arses they displayed. Let's hope we get more for Christmas!
6th October 2005 Wow! Last night was our busiest quiz so far: 19 teams! Even one team writing on the fruit machine - that's dedication.
The Past Quiz Nights sections has been updated with pics of the winners as usual, but there's more. After answering lots of emails and posts about results, we've decided to post the final scores as well. They're converted into percentages so you can compare each month and see if you're impoving... or not.
The next quiz will be held a week earlier than usual, on Wednesday 26th October as it's a Halloween special. But don't worry, we've adopted a broad definition for "horror film" to try and make sure there's something for everyone. Hope to see you there!
11th September 2005 Thanks to all those who came along to the quiz last week. Every table in the pub was taken up by quizzers! It was good to see that plenty of new faces have become regulars - we hope you keep coming!
The Past Quiz Nights sections has now been updated with pics of September's glorious victors.
The next quiz will be on October
5th (poster below).
4th August 2005 Huge thanks to the Alan Smithee guest hosts for their great quiz last night. The "send off line" round was pure genius!
We're back for the September quiz, and here's the poster to get you in the mood.
7th July 2005 An excellent quiz from our Steven Seagal guest hosts last night. We hope they'll be back soon. And for August we're going to try out another set of guest hosts - the Alan Smithee team. They'll be bringing us an '80s spectacular. We're predicting mindless action and bad haircuts. We can't wait! But in the meantime, here's their poster.
2nd June 2005 Thanks to everyone who came to last night's quiz. Hopefully we proved the first one wasn't just a fluke! And we're glad to see numbers are picking up.
The Arnie guest star question intro got another great response but from now on it'll be different guest stars for each quiz. Who will we choose...?
Winners pics are available under
June 2005 in the Past Quiz Nights menu. Well we're gonna take a break for July and hand over next month's quiz to the Steven Seagal is Fat and Always Late...Fact! team, who we hope will become regular guest hosts. Apparently we can look forward to plenty of nudity (...in their quiz). Let's hope it's not the Seagal himself.
6th May 2005 I'm glad to report that our first quiz went really well, without any technical hiccups, despite a move to our new DVD-based format. Thanks to everyone who came up to us after the show to say how much they enjoyed it, especially the new half-time picture round. And we certainly weren't expecting rounds of applause for our intros!
Check out the Past Quiz Nights section for pictures of the winners and their prizes. It was a lot of work, but we'll definitely be back next month. As proof, here's the League of Gentlemen-inspired poster for June.
11th April 2005 And so to the first of the next generation of Bigger Boat quizzes. Which, in spite of the poster, isn't a Star Wars special - it's just an excuse for a bad pun.
8th April 2005 After two great years, Paul and Stew have said goodbye to running the quiz. On behalf of all those who have enjoyed the first Wednesday of every month with them, I thank them and congratulate them for all their hard work. Well done guys.
But fear not, young quizzlings, for the Bigger Boat will live on!
